If it seems slightly tacky for Kirk to present O'Neill's story to us in the extravagant manner of a renegade-cop/detective movie, that's mitigated to a large degree by the immediacy and highness of the stakes in the internecine-bickering bureaucratic game in which this particular, real-life renegade was shunted aside, with ultimately disastrous consequences. The somewhat hyperbolic narration Kirk has written, and the rather portentous way in which it's ready by Lyman, are odd but fairly excusable in context The Man Who Knew aired October 3, 2002, meaning that its preparation took place in too-close-for-subtlety chronological proximity to the attacks that traumatized and saddened the nation. Valerie James and his son were the last to hear from him on the morning of September 11, when he called from work to reassure them, from amid the panic and death, that he was still alive his body was later found in the rubble of the two towers. The former agent took the civilian job that seemed most suitable to him: head of security at the World Trade Center, where, he was convinced with very good reason, bin Laden and his followers would be back to "finish the job" they started in '93. When O'Neill left the FBI, it lost its principal alarm-trigger vis-à-vis Osama bin Laden. ambassador's distaste for his unwillingness to toe the line and be a team player, led to an unpopularity so severe that the Bureau powers-that-be used the first excuse they could - O'Neill's improper removal and sloppy loss of some confidential reports, bending regulations in order to take his work home with him - to turn the heat up so high that he felt forced out. Cole, his personal bravado, clashes with nemesis/rival Tom Pickard (who received the promotion that O'Neill thought was his), and, ultimately, his removal as the head of a big counterterrorism push in Yemen due to a U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, and the 2000 suicide bombing of the U.S.S. As O'Neill followed the bin Laden trail through the " black hawk down" episode in Somalia, bombings of U.S. His abrasiveness aside, though, interviewee after interviewee tells us of O'Neill's feverish dedication to tracking bin Laden from the moment he was connected to the first WTC bombing, in 1993. That meant that O'Neill was both valuable and a thorn in the side of the FBI bureaucracy, which didn't care for his aggressive "sharp elbows," relatively eyebrow-raising personal life, or flashy, dandyish, cigar-smoking style and persona. Clarke, is that of a "maverick," someone obsessed with his work, both in terms of the integrity of excellent performance and when it came to the ambition of getting ahead. and a large group of former colleagues and bosses including White House Counterterrorism head/future Bush Administration whistleblower/target Richard A. The posthumous picture of O'Neill that emerges through interviews with Valerie James (his long-time girlfriend after he had virtually abandoned his wife and family, being " married to the bureau") his son, John O'Neill, Jr. From there, he was moved to the New York bureau in 1992 and placed in charge of hundreds of agents working on defusing anti-U.S. office to apply his skills to international terrorist threats. FBI agent John O'Neill had made his name in Chicago with a stellar history of fighting domestic crime when, in the '80s, he was transferred to the D.C. With voice-over narration (written by the episode's director/producer, longtime Frontline stalwart Michael Kirk and read by actor Will Lyman, who served the same duty in Todd Fields's Little Children) and multiple in-depth interviews with those who knew and worked with its subject, The Man Who Knew tells the story of one victim of the World Trade Center attacks who knew, with detailed, well-investigated and -interpreted facts behind him, that such an attack had long been in the making and was, in fact, the culmination of a series of deadly actions that he could prove bin Laden was behind. What the program reveals is a nightmare scenario of two instances of indulgence in the dark side of human nature - one the crime of murderous violence, the other misdemeanor of petty personality conflicts, ego, and territorialism - that colluded to allow for the awful realization of bin Laden's scheming on that infamous, tragic day. But according to The Man Who Knew - one of a large handful of PBS Frontline episodes now being made available on DVD - there was a tiny but very significant minority, a cadre of American counterterrorism and intelligence officials, who were well aware of bin Laden's long-running, deeply entrenched, and well-financed terrorist plots. Like what I would guess is the majority of Americans, I had never heard of Osama bin Laden until after September 11, 2001.

The London Symphony Orchestra and Orchestre de Paris have been his symphonic partners for scores like la Guerre du Feu (Jean-Jacques Annaud, 1981), Lord of the Flies (Harry Cook, 1990), Coup de Torchon (Bertrand Tavernier, 1981), l’Ours (Jean- Jacques Annaud, 1988) or Nelly et Monsieur Arnaud (Claude Sautet, 1995).ĭefined by Bertrand Tavernier as “musical screenwriter”, Philippe Sarde is famous to create feeling with his music that goes beyond the images on screen. Philippe Sarde’s music has been recorded by the best musicians of his generation: Chet Baker for Flic ou Voyou (Georges Lautner, 1979), Stan Getz for Mort d’un Pourri (Georges Lautner, 1977), Stéphane Grapelli for Beau-Père (Bertrand Blier, 1981), Alexandre Lagoya for Every Time we say Goodbye (Moshé Mizrahi, 1986) or Ron Carter and Buster Williams for le Choix des Armes (Alain Corneau, 1981). Phillipe Sarde received an Oscar nomination for Tess (Roman Polanski, 1979), as well as being nominated 10 times for the Best Music César, winning the prize for Barocco (André Téchiné, 1976). His exigency and the originality of his writing, mixing unforgettable melodies with unusual orchestrations, made him the regular composer of Claude Sautet, Marco Ferreri, Bertrand Tavernier, Roman Polanski, Georges Lautner, André Téchiné, Costa-Gavras and many others. This marked the start of Philippe Sarde’s legendary career, writing scores for the best directors that went on to become milestones in film music. The immediate success of the music and the recording of the Chanson d’Hélène by Romy Schneider made him immediately famous for his very first movie. Son of an opera singer and nephew of the composer George Auric, his career began with les Choses de la Vie (Claude Sautet, 1970) at the age of 16. Known as one of the most original French film composers, Philippe Sarde’s career embraces 50 years of collaboration on the best movies and with great directors. Its rounded side, on the other hand, is sharp enough to slice the inner avocado, all without cutting through the skin. The model's metal blade incorporates a serrated edge that lets you easily cut the avocado in half. Its BPA-free plastic handle with its soft-touch coating will make sure the slicer won't slip out of your hands, so you'll unlikely be able to injure yourself, regardless of how awkward and clumsy you may be. Instead, what we have here is more of a flip-blade, with its own advantages and disadvantages.įirst, for our taste, it is a much more comfortable tool compared to the usual avocado cutter. It doesn't incorporate the usual fan blade that cuts the actual fruit into different pieces. Prepworks by Progressive presents an interesting slicer here. Though a slicer like that is an inherently simple tool, this one does it all a little better than most. This avocado tool from OXO Good Grips, with its well-thought-out construction and practical design, doesn't really leave a whole lot of room for complaints. The stainless steel parts aren't susceptible to rust and corrosion and the plastic parts are surprisingly sturdy. It gives you a nice non-slip grip without any extra baggage like cramping or hand fatigue.Īs per usual, the slicer is top-rack dishwasher safe, meaning you shouldn't have any maintenance issues with it. The plastic handle is ergonomic, soft, and overall comfortable. After that, you can easily spread these little pieces all over a toast and enjoy a delicious and healthy breakfast. The "slicing" part, of course, comes from this nice little fan blade that lifts the actual edible fruit from its skin in seven perfect pieces. The plastic serrated blade is potent enough to cut any avocado to its core, all without being too sharp to the touch. You might have some issues with abnormally large avocados but that statement applies to just about any slicer out there. Using the stainless steel pitter, you'll never fail to remove pits with but a single twist of your wrist. With this little kitchen tool from OXO Good Grips, you'll be able to split, pit, slice, and scoop avocados about as safely, easily, and effectively as it can be. If you’re the host or hostess with the actual mostest, you could bake some holiday-themed goodies or prep a batch of Christmas cocktails and drop them off at your guests’ homes before the party. You could even add some dinner party elements as long as everyone has time to prepare (or access to Uber Eats). Whatever you choose, just be sure to include it on the invitation. You can also encourage your guests to follow some sort of dress code - cocktail attire, ugly Christmas sweaters, or something else meaningful to the group. Just shopping for gifts with each other in mind can help you feel close. No matter what kind of online party you host, there are plenty of ways to make it feel like you’re still together. At the end of the party, the host can jot down who has which gifts and share the shipping addresses of the recipient with the gift giver, who can then ship it directly to their home. The game goes on until all the gifts have been opened (and each gift can only be stolen a maximum of three times). The second person to choose can, of course, choose a new present, or steal a gift from the original person. When the first person picks a gift, the giver can reveal the image or share the link with the group. During the virtual get-together, each guest should have a link or image of their gift ready to share. Just like with the Secret Santa party, you’ll need to pick a date and time for your party, send out invites, and establish a price range for gifts. The blog Celebrations At Home has some excellent tips for this. Naturally, doing this virtually takes a bit of extra thought, but it’s just as fun. All the guests are assigned a picking order at random, and one by one they choose a gift from the pile or opt to steal an open gift from someone else. When it’s finally time to log on, make sure you and all your guests have a Secret Santa gift in front of them ready to rip open. Once the deadline arrives, you can match up your RSVPed Secret Santas with their gift recipients, and distribute their wish lists and shipping addresses. You'll then send out your email or Facebook invites (don’t forget to include your Zoom link!) and state an RSVP deadline. (Bonus: Klarna allows you to pay over time, so if you're feeling tight this season, it could help.) Set a budget so all your Secret Santas keep their gifts in roughly the same price range. Here’s where the virtual party planning tips come in handy - blogs Holidappy and Sunshine Whispers have great suggestions. You’ll need to create a guest list and reach out to all your invitees for their email addresses (and this year, you’ll need their shipping addresses, too). A Spirited Secret SantaĮven though this year's shindig is virtual, all the usual pre-party logistics still apply. If you're doing this one the old-fashioned way (if you can call planning a virtual party old-fashioned) and handling it yourself, these are all the steps you need to take. In any case, you’ll have to decide whether you want to DIY your party on Zoom or use a special platform like Elfster, which is free and designed for just this sort of get-together. You may even be trying to get your family on board with doing a smaller, virtual gathering instead of all piling into one house this year. Maybe you’re usually in charge of organizing the holiday party at work, or your friend group is opting to meet online these days for safety reasons. Here’s how to have a virtual Secret Santa party or white elephant gift exchange without losing too much of the festive fun.
